What to see in Ankara

One of the first attractions to see in Turkish Capital, Ankara is Anıtkabir without a doubt. Anıtkabir is the mausoleum of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of the Republic of Turkey. It is one of top visited spots in Ankara, both by Turkish and foreign tourists. The drive from Esenboğa Airport to Anıtkabir, this most symbolic attraction in the city, is about half an hour. Anıtkabir is especially very crowded on national holidays, like The Commemoration of Atatürk, Youth and Sports Day on May 19. The mausoleum-museum consists of four sections, including one that showcases Atatürk’s personal items, oil paintings made about the National Independence War, and many more. Furthermore, Ankara has not only witnessed the foundation of the Republic, but also a history of thousands of years. Anatolian Civilizations Museum in Ulus, Ankara is one of the few museums in the world that brings you that thousands-of-years-long history. You only need to drive about half an hour on Özal Boulevard from the airport to the museum. The War of Independence Museum is another museum that showcases the real soul the Independence War. You can also visit the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) building. The Assembly building was constructed by the Austrian architect Clemens Holzmeister. Today, the Assembly stands on 500 thousand square meters. Atakule is another symbolic structure in Ankara. Atakule was opened on October 13, 1989, on the 66th anniversary of Ankara becoming the Turkish Capital. For those who wish to witness history even more, Ankara Castle is another prominent option. The Castle is thought to have built by the Persians in 7 A.D. and was respectively used by the Roman Empire, the Byzantine Empire, the Seljuks, the Crusaders, and the Ottoman Empire. On a day with little traffic, it takes about half an hour from the Airport to Ankara Castle.
